class="wp-caption-text">The Altstadt</p></div><p>Cars are prominent in Freiburg, but there is a different relationship between people, bicycles, transit and cars compared to home.  Cars defer to pedestrians, bicyclists, and transit as they negotiate the city streets.  Bicyclists and pedestrians move around each other fluidly.  There is also a higher level of convenience in using non-automobile travel modes.</p><p>Freiburg has made the <a

href="http://yosemite.epa.gov/opa/admpress.nsf/d0cf6618525a9efb85257359003fb69d/44c4232c5ea89ff48525784e0066a58c!OpenDocument">recently announced</a> updates to its Energy Star Rating requirements on televisions and cable boxes. The revisions are the first in a list of about 20 products that will receive updates to their Energy Star Rating requirements this year.</p><p>Currently, Energy Star rated televisions hold at least 70% of the Market Share. The stricter standards mean, according to the EPA, &#8220;substantial overall energy bill reduction, and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions reductions.&#8221;</p><p>The new standards are requiring a 40% reduction in watt usage. For example, a 60 inch television currently averages about 282 watts, but the come September the same 60 inch TV will be required to use less than 108 watts to receive an Energy Star Rating. class="wp-caption-text">President Barack Obama</p></div><p>In the 2011 State of the Union Address, President Barack Obama highlighted many goals as part of the administration&#8217;s &#8220;winning the future&#8221; campaign. Energy efficiency was one such goal, and last Thursday the President, speaking at <a
title="Penn State" href="http://live.psu.edu/story/51177" target="_blank">Penn State</a>, unveiled the <a
title="Better Buildings Initiative" href="http://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/2011/02/03/president-obama-s-plan-win-future-making-american-businesses-more-energy" target="_blank">Better Buildings Initiative</a>, a plan for a 20% improvement in energy efficiency in commercial buildings by 2020. It&#8217;s no coincidence the plan was reveled at Penn State, a school with more than 500  researchers working on energy and environmental studies. The President  touted Penn State as a leader in the research towards a clean energy  future.</p><p>The initiative also strives to reduce companies&#8217; energy bills by $40 billion per year. href="http://www.350.org/map">Global Work Party</a>&#8221; on October 10th (10-10-10).</p><blockquote><p>In 1979, President Jimmy Carter put solar panels on the White  House. In 1986, President Reagan removed them and they were never  replaced. Years later, Unity College in Maine adopted the panels where they have lived ever since. href="http://www.capewind.org/modules.php?op=modload&#38;name=Sections&#38;file=index&#38;req=viewarticle&#38;artid=24&#38;page=1">Cape Wind</a>, and addressed a question about the alternative of purchasing clean energy from other places, if it were cheaper than producing our own. In response to this, he unwittingly <a
href="http://www.phrases.org.uk/meanings/226950.html">quoted</a> Chairman Mao, &#8220;I don&#8217;t know who said it, but, we&#8217;re going to have to let a thousand flowers bloom,&#8221; and concluded that we&#8217;ve still got a long way to go, and no avenue should be left unexplored. The Climate Congress is open to the public. The main aim will be for delegates to unite on specific recommendations for City action. The Congress will use the opportunity to decide on whether to accept a final report on proposals and to bring the new citizen action teams together.</p><p>During the second Climate Congress, 75 delegates convened to develop <a

href="http://www.350.org/node/13013">350.0rg&#8217;s</a> call for a science-based international climate treaty and effective U.S. legislation to get us back below 350 ppm of CO2 in the atmosphere.</p><p>The program includes compelling speakers invoking the moral imperative for world leaders to act, a group photo documenting the event, and development of photo messages to President Obama calling for action.<strong> </strong> People will be meeting at Cardinal Cushing Park in Boston, located  at the intersection of Cambridge Street and New Chardon Street (across the street from Senator Kerry&#8217;s office at One Bowdoin Square).  The vigil is being held from 6:00 &#8211; 7:30pm with a&#8230; <a
