class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-7130" title="Picture 1" src="http://energytwodotzero.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/Picture-16-300x225.png" alt="" width="300" height="225" /></a>Dresden, a city of 220,000 in the eastern part of Germany, was the target of Allied firebombing in World War II that largely destroyed the city.  The wonderful skyline of towers built by the Saxon kings was restored and the downtown area is vibrant.   While the eastern part of Germany has suffered from emigration to other regions, Dresden has been growing modestly.</p><p>The City is bisected by the Elbe River and has a number of tributaries that flow into it.  In 2002, Dresden saw a major flood that inundated the city center, including the central railway station.  Over 1 billion Euros in damage was inflicted by the floods and some lives were lost.  The flooding was the result of the Elbe River overtopping its banks, rising groundwater, and the Weisseritz River defying&#8230; <a

class="wp-caption-text">Cycling in Groningen, Netherlands</p></div><p>Recently, I had the opportunity to travel to the Netherlands and visit many different areas within the country. I landed in Amsterdam and took a train roughly 200 kilometers (125 miles) to the city of <a

The trip took about as long as it takes to get from one end Boston to the other via the green line (sadly I&#8217;m only half joking here). Over the next three weeks, they would reach out to over 440 people in small local businesses&#8212;barber shops, cafes, hardware stores, book stores, florists, bars, convenience stores, restaurants, bike shops, you name it&#8212;in North Cambridge, Leslie and Porter Square, Harvard Square and Church Street, Mount Auburn and Brattle Street, Dana Hill, Bow Street, Central Square, Lafayette, Concord Ave, Huron, East Cambridge, and Broadway.</p><p>In 90+ degree heat, over previously unfamiliar terrain, and sometimes through rain storms, the teams of interns  met with over 190 business owners and discussed energy efficiency opportunities&#8212;programs and incentives from&#8230; <a

Predictions of the <a
href="http://www.newsweek.com/blogs/the-human-condition/2010/05/05/oil-spill-answers-when-and-where-will-the-oil-slick-come-ashore.html">results to come</a> in the next weeks and months are concerning to say the least, and the <a
href="http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=127874305&#38;ft=1&#38;f=1025">estimate</a> of how much has been leaking each day continues to rise. BP comes up with a <a
href="http://www.aolnews.com/surge-desk/article/bp-s-new-gulf-oil-spill-cap-what-s-different-this-time/19548690">new method</a> to &#8220;fix&#8221; the problem every few weeks, each seeming promising with a side-serving of bad news.  Effects on <a
href="http://amfix.blogs.cnn.com/2010/05/27/is-oil-spill-sickening-fishermen/">humans</a> are starting to surface, some <a

The panel was moderated by Rob Garrity, the Executive Director of <a
href="http://www.massclimateaction.org/">Massachusetts Climate Action Network</a> (MCAN). The panelists were three climate policy experts: Policy Consultant Sonia Hamel, Professor Michael Dorsey, and Policy Analyst Peter Shattuck.</p><p>The panel discussed the <a

href="http://cambridgeenergyalliance.org/res-links/energy-efficient-products"><acronym
title="compact fluorescent lightbulb">CFL</acronym></a> for every incandescent bulb they turned in&#8212;over 200 efficient CFLs found homes. The CFLs were provided by the <a
href="http://cambridgeenergyalliance.org/">Cambridge Energy Alliance</a> and <a
href="http://www.hres.harvard.edu/about.htm">Harvard Real Estate Services</a> (HRES). <a
href="http://www.heetma.com/"><acronym
title="Home Energy Efficiency Team">HEET</acronym></a>, CEA, and HRES organized the promotion and logistics of this successful competition.</p><p>During the swap, residents learned about other ways to <a
href="http://smartercambridge.org">cut their carbon emissions</a>&#8212;<a
href="http://cambridgeenergyalliance.org/res-links/summer-tips">seasonable tips also available</a>&#8212;and many signed up for a two-month long competition to see who can reduce them the most.</p><p><strong
class="clear">The results are in!</strong></p> Apartments reduced their electricity use by an average of 11%

The special certification ceremony, which was held at the Cambridge City Hall Annex, was co-sponsored by the <a
href="http://www.cambridgema.gov/">City of Cambridge</a>, <a
href="http://www.cambridgelocalfirst.org/clf15/">Cambridge Local First</a> and the <a
